GWP Intervention

IV. INTERVENTION PROCEDURES FOR GATEWAY STUDENTS

All 2001-2002 entering 9th graders who fail to pass a Gateway test the first time must be provided with remediation/intervention opportunities before they may retest.  The school should use information from the QSRs and criterion-referenced results to plan intervention strategies for individual students.  Counselors, in the role of Gateway Intervention Coordinators, should work with classroom teachers and special education teachers to coordinate these offerings.

Remediation is defined as being strategies employed before or during the course in which the test occurs.

Intervention is defined as strategies which occur after a test has been administered.

In Johnson County, students in elementary and middle school who are identified as “at-risk” in science, math, or language arts will be encouraged to take advantage of tutoring and/or remediation activities.  Extended Learning funds will help provide these opportunities.

At the high school level, scheduling of students will take on a new priority as every effort is made to place students in appropriate subjects and at appropriate levels to ensure success in the Gateway subject and on the Gateway test.

Best practices and effective strategies will be employed in courses preceding the Gateway subjects with a special emphasis on Gateway Indicators.

Types of Interventions

o       1.  Slightly Below Proficient

This intervention technique will center on specific performance indicators for each student.  This will prove effective for students who missed the cut-off score by only a few raw points.  It will not require a separate course or extended time in a subject.  Tutoring during the school day or before/after school will be an appropriate research-based intervention.

o       2.  Some Competency

This intervention technique will require more extensive tutoring before/during/or after the school day.  Again, performance indicators will be used to identify student needs.

o       Extreme Documented Weakness

Students who fail the Gateway test by a large percentage of raw points will require extensive assessment and assistance in order to be ready for the next administration of the test. During the school year 2002-2003, Johnson County High School will begin offering specific remedial subjects entitled Gateway Biology, Gateway English 10, and Gateway Algebra.  Students in these courses will focus not only on performance indicators but also reading skills, test-taking strategies, and other basic skills necessary for successful completion of the Gateway test.  Special education students who fail the test will also be involved in consultative time with a special education teacher.  These special Gateway courses cannot count as a credit in that subject and are only intended to be taken after the failure of a Gateway test. A certified person in that subject must be the teacher in the course.

  The Documentation Process

A form MUST be filled out for each student who fails a Gateway test.  This form will serve as the intervention plan for that student.  A copy of this form is on the following page:

V.                 ABSENTEE POLICY FOR STUDENTS

For students who are absent during administrations of the Gateway/End of Course tests, it will be the responsibility of the principal to determine possible make-up/allowance procedures on a case-by-case basis.  Gateway test completion, however, is a graduation requirement set by the state.  The principal will have the authority to give any student an “Incomplete” on a Gateway/EOC test for course grade requirements based on absence documentation.  This “Incomplete” would stand until the next administration of the test.  If the student fails to take the test during that administration, the test grade shall revert to “0”.

The Gateway testing requirement for graduation, however, is non-negotiable based on state law.
